Portia Lee James DeGeneres is an American-born model and actor with the pseudonym Portia de Rossi. She legally changed her surname at the age of 15, adopting the name she loved 'Portia' after the Shakespearean character of 'The Merchant of Venice.' Portia believes it's the most daring thing she's ever done. The actress said her inner struggle over her sexuality prompted her to take the leap. Portia started her career in film with a romantic comedy drama titled 'Sirens' where she was a part of the cast alongside Hugh Grant. She also appeared in several American films and television shows including Too Something, Nick Freno, licensed Teacher, Arrested Development, and, Better Off Ted. She was famous for her character in the role of a Boston-based lawyer who was named Nelle Porter in the drama series on TV called Ally McBeal. Her character played the lead character in the show's comic relief.
